I visited three key battlefields that pertain to the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War: the Battle of Bentonville, Averasboro Battlefield, and Alamance Battleground.
The Battle of Bentonville was the largest Civil War battle in North Carolina and one of the biggest in the entire war between the States. It was fought from March 19th to 21st, 1865 and was part of the Carolinas Campaign. It was the fourth and final battle between the armies of Union General William T. Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, which resulted in a Union victory.
The Battle of Averasboro was a Civil War battle that was a prelude to the Battle of Bentonville, which occurred three days later. It was fought on March 16th, 1865 between Union General Oliver O. Howard and Confederate General Henry W. Slocum in Harnett and Cumberland Counties in North Carolina. The result was inconclusive.
The Battle of Alamance is widely considered to be the very first battle of the American Revolution, which occurred on May 16th, 1771 in Alamance County, North Carolina. It was the final battle of the War of Regulation, which was a colonial rebellion over issues of taxation and corrupt local politicians. It was a British victory, but an important prelude to later events.
